Interviewing for a job is always stressful. You have limited time to make your impact and depending on whether it’s a Zoom/Teams meeting or sitting across from your interview partner, you need to convince them that you’re their dream hire. You may be the tenth person interviewed for the position, you just never know!

When selecting candidates to meet their clients, recruiters always evaluate how a person presents and interviews. “She’s got great communication skills and presents well – you’ll enjoy speaking with her” – these are the kind of comments recruiters include when presenting their valuable candidates to hiring managers. You might ask yourself “why”? Simple: anything that increases the odds of the hiring manager wanting to interview your best candidate.Recruiting is focused on building relationships with clients; they trust recruiters judgement and effectively use them as a filter to find out which person is best suited for their organization.

Don’t go into your next interview without a plan! Mention some (or all) of the points below during your interview to reinforce why you’re the perfect candidate for the job.

1.       “I am highly motivated”: In the age of quiet quitting, employers are looking for brand ambassadors that are dependable and meticulous. Mention why you’re motivated to achieve new things – people love a can-do attitude!

2.       “I understand what your company does”: Do your research on what the company does, their structure, which products/solutions they sell, etc. Hiring managers expect you to have done your research on the company because they want you to be excited about working for them. Not knowing anything about the company often disqualifies you automatically because you’ve just shown you don’t care enough to prepare thoroughly for the interview.

3.       “I’m flexible/adaptable”: Being able to adapt to a rapidly changing environment is key in business. You have to be flexible and be an adept multi-tasker. Show your interview partner that you are equipped to master any problem – feel free to include examples of how you were able to adapt and excel in past situations in your last role(s).

4.       “I have a positive attitude”: Never speak negatively about your past employers – you never know if your interview partner is connected to someone in your past job. Focus on positive attributes you bring along and how these will fit in with their culture.

5.       “I am a team player”: A company is composed of many different people – having great social skills and being able to work together with people with different attitudes and characters are important points to mention.

6.       “I have relevant experience and will hit the ground running”: There will obviously be a ramp-up phase during your onboarding for the job but employers are hoping for you to generate value quickly. Wow your interview partner by emphasizing your past experience doing similar tasks (you can always list some of the requirements for the job and how you have done similar tasks in ….).

7.       “I am a good communicator”: You may be working autonomously a lot or in a small team, being able to get your message across professionally to stakeholders at all levels of an organization can be your key to success.
